Slide N Glide has been replaced by Slip Plate

Graphite Lubricant

Hello!

Just wanted to let you know that Slide 'n Glide has been discontinued and replaced by Slip Plate as of 2019. Long story short, the manufacturer of Slide 'n Glide bought the company that makes Slip Plate. Then they raised the price of Slide 'n Glide and lowered the price of Slip Plate. As much as we liked the Slide 'n Glide brand over the years, we are happy to have the Slip Plate line of products to sell. One advantage that Slip Plate has is a higher carbon content, and better bonding chemicals... So it cures more quickly and harder, to give you a bit better life span. Also, Slip Plate has rust-inhibitors built into the formula.

The only downside to Slip Plate is you will want to spend more time mixing it up, and keep it covered while you're painting if it's a really hot day. The solvents evaporate more quickly, which can lead to the graphite getting thick and sludgy toward the bottom of the can. At the shop where I used to work, our service manager used to cut the Slip Plate with a bit of brake fluid to thin it down when this happened.

A few other tips:

Don't store this in a shop area where the temperature dips down below freezing.

If you have some left over, make sure you get the paint cover on really tight.

Sedimentation is normal with Slip Plate... yes, you will have a big mass of graphite carbon at the bottom, and yes, it takes a lot more effort than Slide 'n Glide to stir up. If you're a lazy guy like me, just bring it down to the paint store and have them shake it up for you.

As in all painting jobs, surface prep is the main thing. If you paint this over accreted layers of graphite and rust, you're going to make the situation worse, not better. Attack all layers of rust and graphite with a needle gun. Prep the surface so it is nice and clean. Put one layer of graphite down. Let it cure for half a day. Curing is the process AFTER drying, in which the molecules of the graphite paint make cross-link bonds. There is a time factor to it, and it happens faster in warm, dry weather. So, if you're doing it in cool rainy weather like the Pacific Northwest, you could even triple that curing time.
